“Too Close” and “Treading Water”- Alex Clare

Although Internet Explorer is the slowest internet browser on the face of the planet (or at least in my experience), it has done one thing right recently. It ran a commercial with great music. Music that I wasn’t aware existed until a few months ago and now am in love with. More specifically, the music of Alex Clare, a British musician that released his first demo this past June.

If you have watched TV or TV shows on the internet recently, you have heard bits and pieces of his song “Too Close” in Explorer’s attempt to remarked themselves as a “more beautiful web,” what ever that means. But I advise listening to the whole song. The build-up from a very soulful sound to the drop is amazing. Plus the video is great, although not seemingly related to the theme of the song, which is friendship that became a little too much. If you have any ideas about how the video fits with this theme, please share!

My favorite song of Clare’s though is “Treading Water.” Like one of my other favorite songs at the moment (“Somebody That I Used to Know” by Gotye–hopefully a post on that in a few days), the song to me is about someone that is still hung up on his last relationship and thus is failing in his present relationship. Although I can’t really relate to this message, the imagery in the video and Clare’s voice are so powerful that I can’t help but love it.

Interestingly, Clare used to date the late Amy Winehouse. I think it is a travesty that they never made any music together because they both have these rich voices perfect for soul/R&B that I think would work perfectly together.

So thank you Internet Explorer for surprisingly doing something right. And although IE9 might be better than IE8, I stick with Firefox or Chrome.

“Fuck Me Pumps”- Amy Winehouse and RIP.

You probably have hear that Amy Winehouse passed away more than a week ago. I was going to feature her in a post when I found out about her death but ended up not doing that for some reason I can’t remember. But I do want to pay tribute to her: an amazing singer and a musician that paved the way for other soulful contralto R&B singers such as Adele.

Different in appearance but two powerful, beautiful singers.

Additionally, if you have been listening to the stories around her death, you might have heard mention of her joining the 27 Club, an “exclusive” group made up of famous musicians that died when they were only 27. Robert Johnson, Brian Jones, Jimi, Hendrix, Janis Joplin, JIm Morrison, Kurt Cobain, and now Amy Winehouse are the most famous “members” but many more exist. I know that Amy’s life, like so many members of the 27 Club, was riddled with drug and alcohol misuse, but it is still sad when someone with so much talent struggles with mental and physical disorders that eventually leads her to an untimely death.

And she did have so much talent. Although before her death I was only aware (and in awe) of her more popular songs such as “Rehab” and “Back In Black,” I have since began to listen to her albums from start to finish. And I have yet to find a song I dislike. I think it is her voice. It is unique, powerful, sassy, confident, and beautiful. The background music, the lyrics, and the videos add to the amazingness of the songs but who are we kidding, her voice is the star.

Similar to my Johnny Cash post, I had a hard time picking one of Amy’s songs to feature. But since you have probably been unindated with her music in the past week, I wanted to pick only one of her songs. Not “Rehab” since it hits a little too close to the truth, though it is a great song. How about “Fuck Me Pumps?” She looks so happy, so this is how I will remember her.

RIP Amy. You will always be remembered.

“Rolling in The Deep”-Adele/ Speechless

I am speechless. I don’t even know how to describe this song other than perfection. So much emotion in her voice, so much beauty in the hurt. And the music video, oh my goodness. Love, love, love. So simple but fits the song perfectly. So enjoy, and don’t feel bad when you are at a loss for words after.

And if anyone says Adele is not beautiful or has to lose weight, they are crazy.

Do you have a song that leaves you speechless?
